Website Design Statistics 2024 – 67 Key Facts For Startups
I love anything on web design. As such, I put up My Codeless Website! But, guess, what?! I realized I actually forgot to put a post on web design statistics! So I scoured the net for the most important facts I could find and shared them with you.
(By the way, I made a post on the best website examples. If you need inspiring designs for your business or portfolio, feel free to check them any time!)
Here they are:
1. 94% of netizens identify a website’s easy navigation as the most important for them.
In a survey conducted by Clutch in 2018, 94% of respondents identified “easy navigation” as their most preferred feature of a website’s design. The secondary and third preferred feature is “descriptions of products/services” and “visuals of products/services,” which both got a 91% vote.
A website’s “beautiful/updated design” only ranked fourth for netizens. Other features netizens prefer to see in a website’s design are “links to social media” (67%), “About us/company team page” (63%), and “Company blog” (50%).
People’s preferences for a website’s design seemed to have not changed much even after three years as a 2023 report from Hubspot showed that easy-to-use and navigate websites remain a primary concern only.
This is based on a 2021 study of Top Design Firms, which showed that 42% of people leave websites due to poor functionality in their design.
2. It only takes 0.05 seconds for an online visitor to form an opinion about a website based on its design.
Forbes Advisor highlighted the importance of first impressions when it comes to a website’s design. This is based on a study that revealed it only takes 0.05 seconds for online users to form an opinion on a website. Online users are quick to identify if a website provides a positive user experience and easy navigation.
In fact, 50% of online users based their opinion on a company from a website’s design. The goal of web design then is functionality and aesthetics combined to provide a positive perception of a company.
3. A poorly designed website will not be recommended by 57% of online users.
The design of a website is so important that it could make or break a company. Most or 57% of online users emphasized that they would not recommend a company if its website design was poorly done. This entails having encountered an unpleasant experience in the website such as difficulty in navigating or heavy-loading visuals.
In addition, another study revealed that 48% of online users look at a website’s design to determine the credibility of a company.
4. An unattractive layout discourages interaction from 38% of online users.
According to a study, designing a website that aims to provide a positive user experience encourages more engagement. This is based on the results of the study that showed 38% of online users refusing to engage with a website with a poorly designed or unattractive layout.
5. It takes online users an average of 6.44 seconds to look at a website’s navigation menu.
Speaking of a website’s easy navigation, online users actually spend an average of 6.44 seconds looking at a website’s menu. This short window is enough for a website’s visitor to study if they can easily understand the navigation menu and find what they need quickly.
If they don’t, they will leave the website instantly. A fact based on a study that underscored 61% of online visitors left a website when they could not find what they needed within five seconds.
6. 70% of websites owned by small businesses do not have a call-to-action.
Adding call-to-action messages and graphics helps direct online visitors in navigating a website. It also serves as a visual aid that makes it easier for online visitors to find what they need or make a purchase. Thus, it is also a visual aid for ensuring a positive user experience, increasing conversion rates, and improving site performance.
7. 57% of online visitors spend most of their time “above the fold” of a website.
Experts estimate that a majority or 57% of online visitors spend time or focus their attention “above the fold” of a website. This pertains to the first area online visitors will see once the website’s landing page or homepage loads.
This is why web designers must ensure the home page or landing page suits the tastes and behavior of online visitors since first impressions matter. Forbes Advisor even said that the first two “screenfuls” of a website’s home page or landing page are where 74% of online visitors spend their view time.
8. Videos included in a website’s design prolong an online user’s stay by an average of six minutes.
Websites designed with videos captivate online visitors and keep them on a website longer. In fact, online visitors spend an average of six minutes on a website with videos. But it would be best to optimize the videos that will be placed on your website to avoid slow-loading pages that trigger online visitors to leave instantly.
9. 83% of online users engage with a website with a beautiful and updated design.
With all the aforementioned statistical data highlighting the need for thorough planning and design, it is no wonder statistics show that most or 83% of online users engage with a beautiful and updated website.
Part of maintaining a website is making sure it gets redesigned alongside the growth of the company it represents. The updated website also pertains to having not only timely information about the company and its offerings but also deploying trendy features and functionality in design.
10. 28% of online visitors will permanently leave a website due to unintuitive design.
According to Clutch, more than a quarter or 28% of online visitors will leave a website and never access it again if they find it has unintuitive design. It is no surprise that blue-colored websites are preferable to online users since blue is perceived as tranquil and peaceful. In particular, blue signifies loyalty, conveys honesty, and symbolizes dependability in business.
13. 39% of online users appreciate a website’s color as the 2nd most important visual element.

This is the reason why the color red is often used to highlight an important aspect in a creative asset like a poster or advertisement. It is to draw people in to what the company expects them to do when they are in the website.
Besides getting relevant and factual information about the company, products, and services, red call-to-action buttons make it easier for companies to draw people in to a successful sale. This is because comprehension improves by 37% because of color.
23. Conversion rates increase by 35% if a website uses original photos.

The end result, in addition to not patronizing the company’s website, is consumers (57%) won’t also recommend it to others.
25. Designing a website with red call-to-action (CTA) buttons results to higher conversions than green call-to-action buttons at an average of 20%.
Based on three case studies, red call-to-action buttons proved to have higher conversion rates at an average of 20% than green call-to-action buttons when designing a website. The three separate case studies were conducted by market research companies VWO, Hubspot, and Dmix.
Conducted in 2010, the DMIX A/B testing involved 600 subjects that resulted in a 34% increase in website conversions through the use of a red call-to-action buttons as against green ones.
Hubspot conducted a similar A/B testing in 2011 that resulted in a 21% increase of conversions and an increase in 2,000 visits for their website.
On the other hand, the VWO study involved Netherlands-based GSM.nl’s e-commerce website. Though it was more of a green versus orange call-to-action button, the latter button still showed 5% more conversions being related to the color red.
26. Blue call-to-action buttons increase conversion rate by 9% versus orange ones.
In an A/B testing study conducted by Monetate, blue call-to-action buttons performed better in a website by increasing conversion rates by 9%.
The A/B testing meant to identify whether orange, being reddish in color family, would increase a website’s performance over blue call-to-action buttons.
A similar result happened to Bing, which designed its call-to-action links in a specific color of blue (#0044CC) in their website. The result was an additional $80 million annual revenue for Bing!
Market analyst company CXL, despite these results, highlighted that it is not really in the color alone that makes a call-to-action button standout but rather choosing the right color that would make it prominent in a website.
That is if it stands out and does not blend in with the website’s color theme, which more often reflects the branding of the company. The wording of the button’s message and the urgency of its tone (such as adding a limited time as in a promotional offer) adds to its effectiveness.

35. 59% of consumers prefer beautifully designed websites over simple websites.
Adobe surveyed 12,169 consumers from six countries across the globe on what type of content they are interested in. The survey, involving two batches of participants aged 18 years and above, showed the importance of “digital decadence” in designing and planning the content of websites.
The survey interestingly revealed that 59% of consumers prefer beautifully designed websites over simple ones. While 41% of consumers prefer simple and plain websites. Which to use for your website? The answer would come from your market profiling and research of target consumers.
But the important thing is to make sure your website’s design is beautiful since it affects your company’s revenue. Adobe highlighted that companies that are design-driven had a 219% higher return than the Standard & Poor’s 500 index in a span of 10 years.

However, 49% will just opt to switch the gadget or device they are using when a website does not display well on their screen. On the other hand, 21% of consumers will make no change under such circumstances.
This data points to the importance of designing mobile responsive websites to avoid increasing bounce rates or losing consumers.

In the recently-released “Web Design Services Market Report 2023 (Global Edition)” of Illinois-based Cognitive Market Research, the website design services market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 8.5% from 2023 to 2030.
The forecast was based on historical data from 2018 to 2023, with the latter as the base year. The sales revenue of the global web design services market last 2022 was $58.5 billion and is projected to reach $95.4 billion by 2030.

The survey particularly showed that almost 1/3 of respondents prefer the dark mode and another 1/3 prefer the light mode. While another 1/3 prefer a combination of both on their mobile phones or devices.
Overall, the main reason online users prefer the dark theme—such as the one used in BlackFin Tech is its reduction of eye strain, aesthetic appeal, better accessibility for the visually impaired or those with poor eyesight, and longer battery life.

The global web development market, which encompasses or includes web design, has reportedly grown substantially over the last few years in proportion to the increase in demand for various products and services online.
46. 60% of online users usability as the top characteristic of a website’s design.
Flashy websites—those with techie effects—can be quite captivating on first or second visits. But if a special effect of a website doesn’t make an online user’s browsing experience easy and convenient, there is a high probability that bounce rates may increase.
Most special features or effects added to a website’s design must have a particular function to make the navigation experience convenient and seamless. This is what usability is all about.
Something that is especially true for an e-commerce website. Statista revealed that 60% of online users who browse shopping websites prefer its features to be easy to use for a seamless shopping experience.
47. 57% of online viewing time is spent on the left side of a webpage.
The most recent eye-tracking study of the Nielsen Norman Group (2018) revealed that 57% of the time online users view a webpage is spent mostly on the left side of the screen.
This reflects a 23% decline from their 2010 data of 80%. Nonetheless, both data still indicate where web designers should situate important information on a webpage for better performance and results.
48. 42% of viewing time decreases within the first 20% of a webpage.
Nielsen Norman Group’s study further broke down the viewing behavior of online users revealing that it has a correlation to how search engine results are viewed. Accordingly, the percentage of viewing time by segment of a webpage’s content could be divided into five equal parts according to screen size.
Thus, the study showed that the first 20% of the page is viewed longest by online users at 42%. This is similar to how online users spend 47% of the time viewing the first 20% of a search engine result.
The next 20% of the webpage (40%) is viewed by 24% by online users and declines to 16% for 60% of the webpage. This further goes down to 11% for 80% of the webpage and 8% for the bottom or 100% of the webpage.
On the other hand, online users spend 27% of the time on 40% of the search engine results page and 11% on 60% of the search engine results page. While 8% of viewing time is spent on 80% of the search engine results page and 6% is spent at the bottom or 100% of the search engine results page.
This means that online users do not like scrolling down a webpage due to short attention spans. Thus, it is best to keep all the important information at the top.
49. Most or 88.5% of web designers agree that flat design is the most popular design used in the industry.
GoodFirms revealed that most web designers (88.5%) find flat design as the most popular design used in websites these days. Flat design, being minimalist or simple, hypes functionality over flashy visual effects, which online users look for.
