10 Game-Changing Semrush Strategies

1. Optimize Your Existing Content

Your SEO cannot function without your existing content. I suggest using SEMrush’s SEO Content Template to optimize your materials further. The template provides thorough guidance on how to create content that will rank well in search engines.

Here’s how you do it:

Step 1: Go to the Semrush’s website.

Log in with your account. If you don’t have an account, you can sign up for a free trial or a paid plan.

Step 2: Proceed to the dashboard.

Go to the “Content Marketing” section.

Step 3: Under “Content Marketing,” click on “SEO Content Template”.

Step 4: Enter your Target Keywords.

This could be anything you want to create depending on your niche.

Let’s go with “shoes” for this one:

After entering your chosen keywords, click on the “Create content template” button.

Semrush will then give you your Google top 10 rivals, key recommendations, and data about how your competitors use your target keywords.

Step 5: Analyze the competition

Make time to analyze all results to make your content more extensive. This approach leads to improved visibility and better user engagement.

Semrush also gives basic recommendations at the end if you don’t know where to start.

2. Use SEMrush to Conduct Competitor Backlink Analysis

Understand how your competitors are building authority. By analyzing your competitors’ backlink data, you can gain valuable insights that will help you improve your strategy.

Use Semrush’s Competitor Backlink Analysis to keep track of high-quality link-building opportunities.

Here’s how:

Step 1: You need to identify your top SEO competitors.

If you don’t know where to begin, you can look for your target keywords in Google and see who ranks on the first page.

If you have no Semrush, you can use Ahrefs, or Moz to identify competitors.

Step 2: Analyze backlinks.

If you have Semrush, go to the “Backlink Analytics” tool from the left sidebar. Enter your competitor’s domain to generate a backlink profile.

Let’s go with Puma for this one.

Once you have your competitor’s data, look at how many backlinks and referring domains they possess. A high number of backlinks from diverse referring domains is often a sign of a strong backlink profile.

Puma has 60.1K referring domains signifying that multiple pages are linking to its website. This number highlights the widespread online presence and authority Puma has across various industries. The backlinks contribute to the brand’s search engine optimization (SEO) efforts, improving its visibility.

Step 3: Identify the strategies your competitors are using.

If your competitors are getting a lot of links from certain domains, you may want to use the same domains for your link-building efforts.

3. Leverage Semrush’s Keyword Gap Tool

I suggest identifying the keywords that your competitors rank for but you don’t.

With Semrush’s Keyword Gap Tool, you can uncover valuable opportunities to target new search terms that could boost your organic traffic. The gap highlights missed opportunities to enhance your visibility in areas where you previously had minimal presence.

Here’s how:

Step 1: Navigate to Keyword Gap in the Competitive Research section.

Step 2: Enter your website and competitor domains for comparison.

Let’s compare Adidas and Puma here. Both are famous shoe brands.

Based on the results, Adidas and Puma have 166, 994 shared keywords

When you think about it, realization will hit you how difficult it is for both companies to utilize unique keywords to outperform the other. This is the reason why keyword gap analysis is important, so you can target certain texts the opposite isn’t focusing on or improving any material around the same keywords.

Step 3: Look for high-value keywords your competitors rank for and include them in your articles.

Understanding the specific words and phrases people use when searching can help you create more relevant and in-demand website content.

4. Conduct Comprehensive Keyword Research

Topic research is important for SEO. You can’t just write whatever you like without considering factors that contribute to better rankings. When you know your content’s flow, you’re making it easier for readers to understand and follow.

Using Semrush’s topic research tool will allow you to discover subtopics and related questions to enrich your material.

Here’s how:

Step 1: Open the Topic Research tool and enter your article’s main keyword.

For example, your chosen topic is “shoes”. Enter the word and hit “Get content ideas”. SEMrush will then give you results that will help expand your reach to a wider audience.

Step 2: Explore suggested subtopics, headlines, and frequently asked questions.

By proceeding with this approach, you’re making your article a go-to resource for insightful and valuable information.

Step 3: Add relevant subtopics and answers to your existing articles to make them more comprehensive.

Exploring topics helps identify content gaps. Ensure your content is timely and relevant. I suggest using topic clusters if you want to cover more in-depth pieces. Clusters increase the relevance of a group of related keywords without getting lost.

5. Conduct a Full Site Audit

Semrush’s Site Audit helps you identify technical issues like broken links or slow page speed.  Fixing these issues can make navigation smoother and more enjoyable for your visitors. If you’re interested, here’s how:

Step 1: Run a Site Audit for your domain from the Projects section.

Here, you can edit the number of checked pages you want to audit. Additionally, you can choose which crawl source you want to prioritize, whether it’s your website, sitemaps on the site, sitemap URL, or URLs from files.

Click “Start Site Audit” if you’re set.

Step 2: Review issues like broken links, missing meta tags, or slow-loading pages.

Check for Errors, Warnings, Crawlability, and more with the help of Semrush.  Addressing SEO issues can improve visibility and organic traffic.

Step 3: Fix these issues to improve the performance of your existing articles.

When visitors encounter broken links, it can lead to SEO penalties, resulting in lower rankings. Additionally, they may reduce damage to your site’s reputation. You can schedule a weekly audit with Semrush. You’ll get a notification after the procedure is finished.

6.  Take Advantage of Semrush’s SEO Writing Assistant

Semrush’s SEO Writing Assistant can help refine your content’s readability and keyword usage for more promising SEO performance.

From the word itself, the tool assists users in discovering new opportunities for growth for a thriving marketing strategy. Here’s how:

Step 1: Open the SEO Writing Assistant and input your article text.

Step 2: Check the recommendations for tone, readability, and SEO.

Let’s assess this one article from Adidas.

As you can see, the tool highlights all related issues. That way, you can solve the problem immediately. Semrush’s SEO Writing Assistant is much like Grammarly if you’re more familiar with that. The tool helps you see if your text is too simple for experts. It also stops accidental plagiarism.

Step 3: Implement changes like adding keywords or improving sentence structure for clarity.

Semrush can help fine-tune your readability. They use an algorithm based on the Flesch reading-ease score formula to ensure that your texts are precise but engaging.

7. Optimize Your Meta Tags

Use Semrush’s On-Page SEO Checker for this step. The On-Page SEO Checker analyzes your pages to offer suggestions for optimizing meta tags like title tags, meta descriptions, and headers for better SEO. Here’s how:

Step 1: Log into SEMrush.

Step 2: Go to the SEMrush dashboard, and click on Projects.

Enter your website’s domain name and click Create Project. Select Add New Project if you have an existing project.

Step 3: Under the “Position Tracking” section, go to On-Page SEO Checker.

Click on the On-Page SEO Checker tab.

Step 4: Click Start New Campaign or Add Pages to begin analyzing your web pages.

You can select which pages you want to optimize. If you’ve decided, click Start Analysis for the SEO check. SEMrush will then assess the on-page SEO of your chosen materials and compare them against the top-ranking pages for your target keywords.

8. Monitor How Your Website Ranks in Specific Geographic Locations

Your rankings can vary significantly between different streets and neighborhoods. You might rank #1 for a keyword in your location, but just a few blocks away, you could drop to #24. To avoid this kind of outcome, I suggest tracking your website’s rankings for specific keywords across different locations with the help of Semrush.

SEMrush enables you to discover how competitors are ranking in the same geographic area. Here’s how:

Step 1: Go to SEMrush and log in to your account.

Step 2: Go to the “Map Rank Tracker”.

Enter the company name and location you want to analyze.

Step 3: Select the geographic area where you want to track your rankings (it can be a specific city, state, or country.)

Step 4: After setting up the locations and keywords, click “Start Tracking”.

SEMrush will start collecting ranking data for your keywords in the selected local area. SEO is dynamic, so it’s necessary to adjust your strategy regularly.

Overall, this feature is beneficial for businesses that rely on local customers and need to track how their site performs in specific areas.

9. Identifying Profitable Keywords to Target Using Organic Research

SEMrush can give you detailed data on organic keywords that are driving traffic to your website and your competitors’ sites. I suggest doing this step to personalize your approach, differentiate yourself, and find new opportunities to outrank your opponents.

Here’s how:

Step 1: Log in to Semrush and go to Organic Research under the Domain Analytics section.

Step 2: Enter your website’s domain to view all organic keywords.

Let’s choose Adidas’ website for all of the steps for you to visualize.

In this section, you can uncover Adidas’ top keywords, most visited pages, primary subdomains, traffic volume, traffic expenses, and additional insights. Works like magic, right?

Utilize this tool to identify areas where your page may be falling short. Simply enter your domain and export the data to a PDF for thorough analysis. Additionally, input your competitor’s site to discover their ranking strengths that you might be missing.

Step 3: Filter results for keywords ranking in positions 11–20 and focus on optimizing related articles.

Why filter for positions 11-20? It’s the range where you’re able to get a big boost in traffic if you can push them to the first page of Google.

The outcomes you achieve will offer long-lasting advantages and promote sustainable development, as you’ll discover popular subjects and emerging trends previously unknown to you.

At My Codeless Website, we are grateful for this tool, as it allows us to leverage every word to ensure our content remains in sync with what audiences are seeking.

I am sure you’ll also be able to make data-driven decisions, improve your SEO strategy, and ultimately increase organic traffic to your site.

10. Optimize for Mobile

Since Google uses mobile-first indexing, ensure your site is optimized for mobile users. Use Semrush’s Audit tool to spot any issues, offering your visitors a pleasant browsing experience. Here’s how:

Step 1: To check your site’s mobile-friendliness, conduct a quick audit.

You can use a Semrush account and open Site Audit.  The tool scans your site for more than 140 technical issues, covering various aspects of mobile SEO.

Another great option is Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool.

Visit the “Issues” report to see a complete list of errors, warnings, and notices.

Click on “Why and how to fix it” for guidance on resolving any issue, or follow the blue links to view the affected pages.

Step 2: Review the report and make changes whenever needed.

Ensure your website is mobile-optimized to benefit your SEO and overall online performance.

Conclusion

Semrush has everything you need to improve your SEO game today.  Incorporating Semrush’s advanced features into your strategy allows you to stay ahead of competitors and drive measurable results.

I am sure you’ll do great by continuously evaluating data and staying proactive. Wishing you the best of luck to your business!
