How to Migrate from Squarespace To Wix

Migrate from Squarespace to Wix

Migrating from Squarespace to Wix involves transferring all your data to your new site. Since Wix doesn’t offer an automatic migration tool, I’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you through the entire process! It’s not a one-click process, but with consistent effort, it’s feasible.

Step 1: Backup your Squarespace website

It’s always a nice idea to back up a website before doing anything. You can’t control everything. Such outcomes may arise, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. For this step, go to Settings > Advanced > Import/Export and export your content in XML format. The export is unfortunately for written content only and won’t allow design elements, products, or images.

For your images, PDFs, and other media files, you’ll have to manually download them from your Squarespace website. If you have a lot of media, this could take some time.

Step 2: Sign up for a Wix account

Sign up for a Wix account and choose at least a premium plan to connect your domain. Here’s the pricing if you’re interested.

Prices on Wix work a bit differently. They have multiple tiers with each tier offering more functionalities. You pick from a variety of different plans based on the project’s requirements.

The best part about the pricing of Wix? It all comes with a custom domain, reliable web hosting, AI creation tools, and 24/7 customer care.

Premium plans include a one-year free domain voucher, and you can try it for free. If the user is unsatisfied,  you can cancel within 14 days and receive a full refund with no questions asked.

Step 3: Manually design your new website

Browse through Wix’s templates and choose one that matches your website style. Wix users have access to hundreds of different templates to choose from. They are divided into numerous categories based on the niches or types of internet sites they are intended for. These categories are super-specific so choosing what is right for you should be easy.

Just replace the placeholder content with your own, and that’s it; you have a website. You can adjust elements to make them just the way you like them. With Wix’s drag-and-drop functionality, you can quickly edit your website without needing technical knowledge.  Real-time preview also allows you to see changes instantly, helping you fine-tune your design.

8. Enter the domain name you’re transferring and type the authorization code.

9. Confirm the transfer.

10. The domain transfer can take up to 7 days. Wait for the process to be completed.

Step 5: Update your SEO settings to ensure your site’s visibility

Use the Wix SEO Wiz to optimize your website for search engines to recognize.  When you first set up Wix SEO Wiz, it creates a customized SEO plan based on your website’s type and will give you recommendations to improve your visibility.

You can also set up Google Analytics on your new Wix site to track your visitors. Go to Settings > Tracking & Analytics in Wix.

Step 6: Test your site before launching

This is the time to double-check everything to ensure a smoother user experience when the site goes live. Websites may render differently across browsers, so testing helps to have an accurate and error-free appearance.

You may use a broken link checker too for this step to ensure none of your pages have missing links. A few suggestions that come to mind are Broken Link Checker (WordPress Plugin), Ahrefs, and Google Search Console.

Step 7: Publish your Wix website

Once everything is set up and tested, you can publish your website. Don’t forget to double-check your settings to ensure it points to Wix

Step 8: Redirect traffic

Since you have a new website, you’ll need to update your domain to point to your new Wix website. This approach helps you avoid losing traffic or SEO rankings. Updating your domain maintains the flow of traffic to your site, preventing any disruption in visits from your previous one.

Step 9: Remember to cancel your Squarespace subscription

Since you’ve migrated to Wix, cancel your Squarespace subscription to avoid any ongoing charges. Log in to your Squarespace account and go to Billing Settings. In the Billing section, find the subscription you want to cancel. Next, click Manage and select Cancel Subscription.  Once canceled, you’ll receive a confirmation email.

Conclusion

Migrating from Squarespace to Wix is easy! Just follow the steps mentioned above for a hassle-free transfer. The migration process can take time, especially if you have a lot of content to move, but it’s not something to worry about. Let me know if you need more help! If you’re not sure about the technical aspect, you can consider hiring a professional.
