Case Study: A $1200 Redesign Of My Blog Generated $24000 Extra Revenue
6 months ago I decided to redesign the way my blog looks. For example, this article is about the best startup website examples.
Okay, I’ll be honest. I hired a designer to improve my existing work.
I paid a designer $1200 and this redesign generated $12000 within the first 6 months. I am expecting similar results for the next months, which makes my additional annual revenue a whopping $24.000.
That’s huge!
Before I dive into the numbers, here is some context:
- I have a blog called “My Codeless Website” that I started as a side project 3 years ago
- I usually blog about inspiring website design and useful WordPress tools
- The blog is getting 60.000 visitors per month
- The blog is monetized with affiliate links
Since my blog is monetized with affiliate links it’s helpful if my readers click on my affiliate links.
That’s exactly the problem I was having.
In my old blog articles, I was focused too much on the subject I am writing about. I didn’t care too much for the affiliate clicks.
I still don’t.
However, the web designer I worked with came up with some clever suggestions to increase awareness of the affiliate links.
Know what’s funny?
- It increased the number of monthly affiliate clicks – as expected!
- It increased the average time on page
- It increased the number of organic visitors discovering my blog via Google
I didn’t change the content throughout the blogs but simply changing the design helped to improve the user experience.
Google’s machine learning could tell that my readers had a better experience reading my blog, and rewarded me with higher rankings.

This was a massive eye-opener for me.
I’ve been a so-called “SEO-Nerd” for 8 years now, but I never fully realised the impact of good design.
So far my focus has always been on writing great articles, technical SEO, and some link building. Now I’m adding design as the 4th pillar to my SEO game plan.
