👋 My Experience With Bilingual Web Design
Hi – it’s Ralph here 👋 In the past 10 years, I’ve designed 15+ bilingual websites. What I learned over the years building bilingual websites:
1. Language Switcher Placement
I recommend placing the language switcher where the visitors can easily see and click it. With this, users should be able to conveniently change between languages.
2. Avoid Using Flags
Some websites make the mistake of using flags as an indicator for a language. I do not recommend doing this, rather, use text to clarify the language being used (e.g., “English” and “Spanish”) instead of flags. There are some instances where more than one language is being used in a country which can confuse the visitors.
3. Check your site in different languages
Spec view in different languages to test how texts are displayed and how buttons are aligned. Check that the accents and special characters are shown in the proper format.
Focus on this, and you’ll be fine.
PS: I suggest taking a look at the website examples below. Get inspired by their designs and see which website builders they’ve used. Best of luck!
